Miner remanded for attacking, robbing duo at Apaiqua Landing
One of the two bandits who terrorised and robbed two miners during a robbery at Apaiqua Landing in Mazaruni, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), was on Thursday charged for armed robbery and felonious wounding.
Samuel Hinds appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court and denied the charge when it was read to him.
The charged detailed that on August 7, 2020, Hinds attacked and robbed 31-year-old Tameshwar Sookram, a miner of Lot 118 Enterprise Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and Jose Da Silva called “Lago,” 42, a businessman and miner of Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Meanwhile, his accomplice is presently a patient at the Bartica Regional Hospital after he was accidentally chopped by Hinds.
Reports are that on the day in question, Sookram was asleep in his apartment when he was awakened by two men, who demanded money. One of the men was armed with a gun and the other with a cutlass.
Sookram reportedly refused to comply with the bandits’ demand, and as such, he was attacked and chopped by the cutlass-wielding bandit. During the attack, Sookram’s left foot was severed from below the knee.
Sookram, however, managed to raise an alarm which saw the Brazilian businessman running to his rescue. He reportedly put up a fight with the men during which a finger was chopped off.
The two perpetrators then escaped with $900,000 in cash. The two injured men were later rushed to the Isseneru Medical Health Centre, where they were treated.
However, due to the severity of their injuries, they were both air-dashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded Hinds to prison until September 10, 2020, when he will make his next court appearance.
