MoU signed between Guyana, Cuba to strengthen trade relations

Cuba-Guyana business and trade relations are likely to be further enhanced with Thursday’s signing of A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Cuba in the Spanish island’s capital city Havana. The Department of Public Information quoted GCCI President, Deodat Indar, as saying that the agreement will improve information sharing, enhance expertise and training between the two countries in light of Guyana’s emerging oil & gas and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sectors.

Indar added that the MoU also brings structure to the ‘unofficial trade’ between the two countries. “A lot of citizens of Cuba are in Guyana and just like we are here and are greeted with opened arms, when they come to Guyana we greet them with open arms and they buy a lot from our businesses which I think they buy for consumption for resale, and that is something very good for our Private Sector because our people are selling and it has a marked impact on businesses,” he observed.
Cuban Chamber of Commerce President, Orlando Hernández Guillén, in his remarks outlined that under the MOU, there will be more avenues for business linkages between the two countries.
“If there is unofficial trade, we can make it official or at least there are conditions in order to work to convert, or include, this official trade,” Hernández Guillén stated.
Guyana’s Ambassador to Cuba, Halim Majeed, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) Natalia Seepersaud, a local delegation and other Cuban officials were all present at the signing of the MoU.
