Rain forces another cancellation of Port Mourant horse race

Heavy rainfall across the country, including at the Port Mourant Turf Club, forced the cancellation of Sunday’s Independence horse race meeting, marking yet another washout at the East Berbice venue.
According to the revised programme, eight races were scheduled for the day, with close to GY$10 million in cash and prizes up for grabs.
The feature event, the Independence Cup, carried a purse of GY$1,875,000 and was set to attract horses competing in the C-Class and lower division over a distance of 6.5 furlongs.

The cancellation comes as horse owners, trainers and jockeys continue preparations for the country’s premier horse racing event, the Guyana Cup, which is scheduled for August 23 at a venue to be confirmed.
With the Port Mourant meet now called off, competitors will have additional time to prepare their horses for the highly anticipated Guyana Cup, which traditionally attracts the nation’s top thoroughbreds and some of the biggest purses in local racing.
