Stewart v Ocando; Terrence v “Doggie” to ignite CASH this Saturday

Battle lines have been drawn and rivalries reignited as the Caribbean Boxing Organisation (CBO)’s event, a Pro/Am Caribbean card, takes centre stage this weekend. While Guyana’s Laured Stewart is billed to battle Venezuela’s Williams Ocando in the most anticipated bout, there will be some kicks on offer in the celebrity match.
There will be enough action to appease the appetites of boxing fans this weekend when the Caribbean Boxing Organisation stages its second event at the Cliff Anderson’s Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.
The Pro/Am card will feature 10 professional bouts, while two amateur fights are lined up in a Guyana vs Trinidad rivalry.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle divulged the idea behind the inclusion of the amateur fights.
“The Guyana Boxing Association has seen it fit, apposite to turn to Trinidad and have two Trinidadians come here to fight on this card, on the amateur segment, if you would call it. We have Simeon Haymer and Ryan Rogers who would be fighting on Saturday,” Ninvalle shared during a press briefing at the Tower Suites on Wednesday.
The GBA boss continued, “What I can tell you, and I can bet you if somebody has some loose change they don’t mind losing,” Ninvalle joked, “That those two would be extremely exciting fights. Ryan Rogers is one of the best we have as a youth, and those who would’ve seen him at the last Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors can attest to that. We thought it right that we support this card, we support boxing, and the only way that we can have good professionals is if we have good amateurs.”
As such, Trevor Arnold, standing in for the President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), went on to disclose the night’s card.
Saturday’s card will see Jamaica’s Daniel Hylton battling Guyana’s Septon Barton in a four-round contest.
Local boy Mitchell Wielson takes on Grenada’s Rickenson Henry. Guyana’s Kevin Isaacs goes toe-to-toe with Shakir Garcia of Trinidad and Tobago. Another local boy, Joel Williamson, will face off with Jamaica’s Toriano Nicholas, while Tyres Tate of Barbados meets Chivarro Blackson of Guyana.
Jamal Eastman enters the squared circle against Edinio Gijsberg of Grenada in another four-round encounter.
Later on, Guyana’s Joel McRae will trade punches with Jamaica’s James Moore in a six-round heavyweight contest while an all-Guyanese clash will see Charwin Estwick meeting Imran Khan for six rounds.
As expected, the Guyana vs Venezuela battle between Laured Stewart and Williams Ocando has garnered a lot of attention, and Stewart has vowed not to disappoint.
Stewart told the gathering on Wednesday, “I don’t know much about the opponent. Mr Bristol sent me the guy; we saw his record. He has 25 wins with 21 knockouts. We thought it’s what we need to push ourselves up in the rankings, and I think it’s also time I start testing myself a little bit more. That’s all we know, and that’s all we need to know. You know, 5 wins with 4 knockouts, so I’m not worried about him. We’re young, we’re fresh, and we’re looking to do this for real.”
“If I can’t knock these guys off, might as well I quit boxing now,” Stewart ‘The Lion’ opined.
On the other hand, the celebrity face-off between Terrence Greene and Bradley ‘Doggie’ Sampson is expected to be another head-turner.
For Greene, a knockout is the only option.
He declared, “There’s not much to prepare for. If you know my opponent, you would know that. Right now, I feel like I’m working with GPL, as on sight, it’s blackout for that boy.”
“This is my chance to impress everybody,” Greene added.
Promoter and President of the CBO, Seon Bristol, was grateful for the support he has received, especially from the respective boards.
“As a promoter, I’m happy to know that I can collaborate and work closely with both the Amateur and Professional bodies, the two boxing fraternities here in Guyana. They say where there’s unity, there’s strength, and with that, I’m able to promote boxing, and I look forward in the future to doing many more of this,” Bristol noted.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, at the Sports Hall, with ringside tickets going for $5000 and bucket seat tickets for $2500.
