Outpatient Department commissioned in Berbice

The Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) Outpatient facility was officially commissioned on Saturday at the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital (NARH).
In 2005 when the new NARH was opened, both the Outpatient and Accident and Emergency units were housed in the same space with the same staff tending to two different types of patients.

Medical Superintendent of NARH, Dr Vasana Henry outlined that this new unit will significantly reduce patient build-up, reducing the previously experienced waiting time in half. Also, the two departments can concentrate on their respective cases.
“Particularly at Accident and Emergency, they can now focus on actual emergency services which is their priority,” Dr Henry noted.
The Outpatient Department is staffed with eight medical personnel who will extend the service six days a week. Meanwhile, the A&E will continue to function on a 24-hour basis.
