Guyana and Canada have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations following meetings between senior officials from both countries focused on trade, investment, and security cooperation.
Guyana’s Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud met with Director General for Central America and the Caribbean at Global Affairs Canada, Mark Richardson, who was accompanied by Canada’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Sébastien Sigouin.
The visit by Richardson followed President Dr Irfaan Ali’s recent engagement with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Canada last week.
Persaud said the discussions were productive and focused on expanding cooperation between the two countries.

“We committed to expand our trade relations, scale up investment opportunities, and strengthen security cooperation. I reiterated the appreciation of the Guyana Government for Canada’s continued support in defence of Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Persaud said.
He added that Canada remains a reliable partner for Guyana, noting that the relationship is “rooted in shared values, principles and mutual respect”.
Separately, Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh also met with Richardson and High Commissioner Sigouin at the Ministry of Finance.
Singh said the timing of the visit was significant, coming shortly after the meeting between President Ali and Prime Minister Carney, which he said reinforced strong bilateral ties.
He noted that discussions highlighted long-standing diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations between Guyana and Canada, as well as opportunities to expand Canadian investment in Guyana across multiple sectors.
Singh also pointed to Guyana’s position as one of Canada’s leading trading partners in the Caribbean Community (Caricom), and both sides discussed ways to further enhance trade and investment flows.
