“Keep working, keep believing” – Sportsman of the year, Glasgow

The history books were rewritten on last Saturday evening as Omari Glasgow became the first footballer to be bestowed with the Senior Sportsman of the year accolade at the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) National Sports Awards for 2024.

The international footballer was the highlight of the NSC’s black- tie gala, grabbing the award to join the legendary company of Emanuel Archibald, Desmond Amsterdam, Stanton Rose jr., Calvin Ming, Troy Doris and Leon Johnson who have won in the most recent editions.
The 21- year- old, after sharing how ‘amazing’ it felt to capture the National award, attributed some of the praise for his exceptional season to his Senior Men’s National team (Golden jaguars) teammates.
Glasgow told this publication, “That season was a great season but I don’t think it’s me alone. I think the team helped me a lot, the guys that I was playing with helped me a lot because that bunch of guys, we were happy together and we were playing for each other. So, they helped me a lot. The work was always about trying to get better every day to do what I do best, score goals and try to create for my team. So, that was the whole process going into that.”
Quizzed about his newfound role model status and his dream to ply his trade outside of Guyana, Glasgow had encouraging words for the next generation of Guyanese ballers.
“I keep saying it every day, that was a dream of mine to leave Guyana to play and I achieved it. I think, anyone that believes in themselves, especially the youngsters that are coming up under me could do the same and achieve what they want to achieve too,” he expressed.
Guyana’s highest international goal scorer went on to divulge, “I have little brothers that play the game too and I’ve been telling them every day, it’s not easy, you got to work. So, just keep working and keep believing.”
But the dream doesn’t just stop at the Major League Soccer (MLS) for Glasgow. Still young yet, the Beterverwagting native is set on rubbing shoulders with the best in European football.
“I want to go as high as I can possibly go. You know, my aim is to go play in the Premier League so, I’m working towards that and I’m taking it step by step and keep improving to do what I have to do,” Glasgow shared.
