Guinness “Greatest of the Streets” Football Tournament…
the formidable Georgetown Unit, Sparta Boss overcame a spirited “Team 25” out of Linden to secure a 2-0 victory and with it the right to once again represent Guyana at the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Football Challenge Caribbean Championship.
Watched by boisterous crowd, Devon Millington and Gregory Richardson recorded goals in the 23rd and 59th minutes respectively to secure the win over the fighting Linden unit.
Millington’s goal came after a prolonged attack on the opposition’s defence, when he manoeuvred his way through the two defenders and slipped the ball in the from the left side.
Richardson’s goal on the other hand came after a series of close attempts, as he unleashed a powerful strike from the right which sparked jubilant celebrations in the crowd.
The Sparta Boss Team collected the well-deserved $400,000 and the championship trophy but most importantly they will jet off to St. Lucia for the regional tournament which takes place on July 2 and 3.
“Team 25” walked away with the second place prize of $150,000 and a trophy while the other Linden side, Wisroc, finished in third place ahead of Channel 9 Warriors.
In that third place play-0ff, Wisroc defeated Channel 9 Warriors 3-1 on the back of a double by Clarence Huggins in the 3rd and 7th and a supporting goal from Michael Williams in the 11th. Kemo Lawrence was the lone scorer for the Georgetown unit in the 9th. Wisroc collected a hard fought $100,000 prize while Channel 9 had to settle for $50,000 and the fourth place trophy.
With regards the regional champions, the hosts St. Lucia are the current defending champions and will receive stiff competition from Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, and the newest country to join the line-up, Curaçao.
The eleven country teams will be vying for the chance to win an all expenses paid trip to Brazil, which is considered the mecca of football, with tickets to a major game in Rio de Janeiro.
With this exciting grand prize to Brazil, Guinness has heightened the competitive stakes, setting the stage for a series of thrilling showdowns.
