
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS)/ National Sports Commission (NSC)/ Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Diamond Jubilee Independence Table Tennis Tournament came to a successful conclusion after five days of competition at the National Gymnasium, with more than 100 players from across Guyana competing in a wide range of categories.
Organised by the MCYS, NSC, and GTTA, the tournament was staged on May 22, 24, 29, 30 and 31. NSC Chairman Kashif Muhammad attended the closing ceremony during the past week and assisted with the presentation of awards, while Andrew Daly represented Godfrey Munroe and addressed the gathering.
Among the standout performers was Samara Sukhai, who finished atop the overall title standings with four championships. She captured the Under-15 Girls, Under-19 Girls, Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles crowns, underlining her dominance throughout the tournament.
National men’s player Shemar Britton secured two titles, winning the Men’s Singles competition and teaming up with Jonathan Vanlange to claim the Men’s Doubles title. Colin Wong also ended with two titles after winning the B Class Open and partnering Malachi Moore to victory in the Junior Open Doubles.
In the junior divisions, Gabrielle Mohabir won the Novice Juniors category, while Carl Kumar took top honours in the Novice Seniors. Adam Rodrigues captured the Under-9 Boys title, Zion Hickerson won the Under-11 Boys division, Ava Hall claimed the Under-13 Girls crown and Cristiano Jacobis emerged victorious in the Under-13 Boys category. Kayden Meusa won the Under-15 Boys title, while Malachi Moore secured the Under-19 Boys championship.
Additional winners included Yeudistir Persaud in the C Class Open and Colin Wong in the B Class Open. In the doubles competitions, Sukhai and Shackecy Damon won the Women’s Doubles title, while Colin France and Nevaeh Clarkston triumphed in the Mixed Doubles category.
Tournament organisers praised the discipline and dedication displayed by the competitors and expressed satisfaction with the large turnout, which included participants from Linden, Bartica and Berbice. They noted that the event reflected the continued growth of table tennis in Guyana and encouraged greater female participation in future competitions.
The organisers also highlighted the importance of sportsmanship, encouraging players to shake hands before and after matches and to acknowledge umpires. The NSC provided trophies and incentives for the tournament, while the GTTA supplied the equipment used throughout the competition.
