“Biggy” rape, robbery trial commences

The rape trial of Carlos Wesley Payne, called “Biggy”, commenced on Wednesday when a 12-member jury was empanelled before Justice Navindra Singh.
Payne is accused of carrying out a rape while he executing a robbery at the Wismar Hospital, Linden on September 11, 2008.

According to the prosecution’s case, Payne forced his way into the hospital in the wee morning hours, and ordered the nurses to hand over jewellery, cellphones and other belongings. The State’s case is that Payne then took the nurses to the back of the hospital to lie down before he executed the rape of one of them.
Moments before the jury was empanelled to hear his case at the Demerara High Court, “Biggy” demanded that Police ranks outside his holding cell to give him a Mackeson, a Milk Stout alcoholic beverage. The rape and robbery accused was heard telling ranks that he needed to cool his head. He also complained of the amount of time he has spent behind bars.
“You know how long I deh in jail?” Payne was heard telling ranks.
Some minutes later, a visibly angry but quieter Payne was called up before Justice Singh to answer to the charges.
All unrelated persons were ordered out of the court as the matter was held in-camera owing to the nature of the crimes. The accused was unrepresented.
Payne was charged some six days after allegedly committing the acts in 2008.
The case continues before Justice Singh today.
