Today, the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), will open its doors to a different kind of sport action as the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) ignites the premier sporting ground with elite hockey action in the Diamond Jubilee Cup.
Hosted in observance of Guyana’s 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the tournament, which is fully supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), was initially slated for May, but was later rescheduled following a hectic period of Independence sport tournaments.

As such, the competition gets underway today, June 11, with round-robin group stage matches, starting from 18:30h. The top two teams from the round-robin stage will advance to the final on June 15, with the championship showdown kicking off at 18:30h under the lights of the National Stadium.
The men’s competition is brimming with talent that is sure to captivate fans from the first whistle. Recent Most Valuable Player Omar Hopkinson brings his award-winning form to the tournament, while Junior National Captain Shaquan Favourite will look to assert his leadership on the biggest stage. Hikers’ dynamic star Jamarj Assanah is expected to dazzle crowds with his explosive style of play, and the skilful Jabari Lovell of Saints Hockey Club rounds out a field packed with class and flair.
The women are not to be outdone. Old Fort Captain Carolyn Deane leads her side with the poise and experience befitting a seasoned skipper. Georgetown Cricket Club’s (GCC)’s Abosaide Cadogan, the reigning Most Valuable Player, promises to light up the tournament with her outstanding performances. At the same time, Saints’ shot-stopper Sarah Harry will be the last line of defence, marshalling her goal with the expertise that has made her one of the most respected goalkeepers in the game.
The Diamond Jubilee Cup is more than a sporting event; it is a celebration of national pride, athletic excellence, and Guyana’s enduring spirit. With an action-packed schedule and star-studded line-ups on both the men’s and women’s sides, this tournament promises to be a landmark occasion in the country’s jubilee year.
Fans, supporters, and sport lovers across the nation are being encouraged to come out in their numbers and be part of history, celebrating 60 years of independence, with a stick, a ball, and national pride.
